Behind and Beyond Information: Helping Students Read Academic Texts
Meghann Walk
If the shift to Common Core means that NYC students are expected to read complex nonfiction texts, what does this mean for librarians? It means we have an opportunity to share our expertise as inquiry and text professionals, and perhaps a new role in advanced literacy instruction. Come learn how to help students (and fellow teachers) deconstruct academic texts as discipline-based, knowledge-oriented inquiry and argument using John Bean’s writing-to-read strategies and Joseph Bizup’s functional definition of sources.

Meghann Walk is the librarian and a social studies instructor at Bard High School Early College – Manhattan. She is currently earning her Certificate of Advanced Study from the University of Illinois, studying information literacy and the high school to college connection.
